Description

Performs technical engineering work in the general planning, design, construction, and repair of city utilities and roadways.  Work assignments are delegated by the Assistant City Engineer and require solving engineering problems and working as part of an engineering team.

Project duties may include planning, budget development and fiscal management, environmental work, design, right-of-way actions, public involvement, project bidding, construction oversight and project closure, reading, reviewing, and approving plans from consulting engineers to verify in accordance with City codes, standards, and specifications.  Engineering work will also include oversight of public work construction and maintenance of building structures and facilities, such as the airport, roads, irrigation projects, pipelines, water, and sewage systems.  

The work includes surveys and inspections; requires the use of independent judgment, initiative and a broad working knowledge of civil engineering and project management.  Candidates should possess strong critical thinking which allows for the evaluation, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to devise new approaches to problems encountered.   The position includes a combination of office and field-related duties.

This position is open to licensed Professional Engineers, as well as Engineer Intern applicants.  Engineer Intern applicants will complete work under the responsible charge of licensed Professional Engineers and are expected to take on progressively more responsible work.



Requirements

STAFF ENGINEER QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related degree is preferred; Licensure in Idaho as a Professional Engineer (PE); or eligible for comity licensure within 6 months by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers in accordance with Idaho Code, Title 54, Chapter 12; valid driver’s license; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex technical information, orally and in writing; must be able to establish good working relationships and have a customer service orientation.  The field-related duties will require the applicant to be capable of performing work in an outdoor environment.

Four (4) years of experience in analyzing, interpreting and applying federal, state and local laws when applying professional engineering principles and practices; writing technical engineering reports; evaluating, selecting and adapting standard engineering plans, specifications and standards in completing projects; reviewing plats and construction plans for residential, commercial, and industrial development; coordinating field work and inspecting projects or facilities for compliance with standards; any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

ENGINEER I QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related degree is preferred; must be able to obtain the Engineering Intern (EI) certification within 1 year of employment.  Additional requirements are a valid driver’s license; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex technical information, orally and in writing; must be able to establish good working relationships and have a customer service orientation.
